Twitch CEO Openly Discusses Company's Current Financial Situation Amid Layoffs
12 Jan 2024
The chief executive officer of broadcasting service Twitch, Dan Clancy, candidly opened up about the enterprise's present condition involving the recent job cuts, emphasizing that the business is currently not turning a profit. During a virtual community encounter held on Twitch on January 11, Clancy explained their situation and the enterprise's efforts to achieve sustainable operation.
Just a day before that conversation, the company's decision to discharge more than 500 of its employees was made public. Clancy stated then that the size of their team still exceeds their operational requirements despite the significant number of layoffs. This challenging and distressing move, in his perspective, was crucial to continue their service to Twitch streamers without jeopardizing their professional lives on the platform.
In his live broadcast, Clancy reiterated his confidence to the Twitch user community that they could still cater to their needs amidst their current financial struggles. He underscored the company's commitment to enhancing Twitch into the best live-streaming platform and building a reliable community, albeit at a slower pace compared to before. He also assured the community that the company has sufficient resources and can still deliver quality service as a reasonably-sized organization.
This development mirrors recent trends in the tech sector, with similar large-scale employee cuts happening in other companies. Unity and Discord were also reported to reduce their workforce considerably, with Unity releasing about 1,800 staff and Discord letting go of 170.
