This year brings a fresh Christmas offering directed by the mind behind Love Actually. A few years back, an animated holiday film released by Netflix rapidly gained the status of a beloved classic. The charming Klaus continues to be a staple in many households during the festive season, leading the platform to endeavor for similar success once more. For this season, Netflix has opted to adapt the children’s book series created by Richard Curtis, known for works like Love Actually, About Time, Notting Hill, and Yesterday.
The project is designed to give life to a new animated feature titled That Christmas. The storyline revolves around a network of friends and family, delving into themes of affection and isolation set against the backdrop of a significant blunder by Santa Claus. According to the synopsis, the film features intertwined narratives focused on the dynamics of love, companionship, and, of course, the enormous number of turkeys resulting from Santa's miscalculation.
Set to premiere on Netflix on December 4, That Christmas is brought to life by Locksmith Animation, under the direction of Simon Otto, who has previously worked on projects like Love, Death & Robots and How to Train Your Dragon. The production team includes Nicole P. Hearon, known for Moana and Frozen, alongside Adam Tandy from The Thick of It, with Curtis taking on the role of screenwriter.
